Hillsborough, Carriacou: Hundreds of people from Carriacou and Petite Martinique turned out on Sunday as the local authorities joined with the rest of the world for the observance of World Food Day.

The annual World Food Day celebration was held at the grounds of the Venders’ Market in Hillsborough Carriacou on Sunday October 16, 2011. This year’s celebration was based on the theme, “Food prices, from crisis to stability.”

The entire grounds were adorned with foods of all types, as farmers and cooks displayed their prized vegetables, pastries and juices along with a number of farm animals such as goats and sheep, a wide variety of sea foods including fish were also on display.

At the event’s proceedings there were remarks by Honorable Senator George W Prime and Permanent Secretary (AG) Mr. Javon Williams. Mr. Williams said that the global food market is tight and suppliers are struggling to meet the demands of people. He also commented on the effects of natural disasters such as droughts and the threats they impose on the food stability of the world.

In addition, a number of farmers and fishermen were awarded for their diligence in the fostering of food stability in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. There were only two fishermen awarded and both were from the island of Petite Martinique. They were Mr. Nudge Patrice and Mr. Gregory Roberts.

In the area of farming the awardees were all female. Two of the awardees were, Ms. Rose St. Hillaire and Ms. Patrice Caesar.
